The Dream of an Ordinary Weirdo

Once upon a time, in a far-off corner of the internet, there was a young man who wanted to make a name for himself as ‘Drachenlord’ (Lord of Dragons). His real name was Reiner Winkler. In a quiet rural village in Germany, Altshausen, his old house would later be known as ‘Drachenschanze’ (Dragon’s Fortress).

His beginnings were no different from those of any other quirky YouTuber. He expressed his passion for metal music, played video games, and shared awkward humor. A bit clumsy and assertive, he was just an ordinary young man wanting to make friends online and create his own little kingdom. His videos were crude, and his speech sometimes rough, but he had a pure desire to communicate with the world in his own way. However, no one could have predicted that each step he took would lead to a massive tragedy.

Chapter 1: The Misthrown Stone

One day, an incident occurred where his sister was threatened. Enraged, Reiner sat in front of the camera and shouted in a fit of rage.

“If you’re so brave, come find me! My address is right here!”

This was the beginning of everything. He was determined to confront the accusations against him, but it was akin to exposing his coordinates in the vast jungle of the internet. This outcry became an ‘invitation’ for those who enjoyed mockery and criticism.

At first, it was just online ridicule and hateful comments. However, his clumsy and aggressive reactions only fueled the fire. Reiner easily fell for provocations and poured out emotional responses. Each of his reactions became new toys for the ‘haters’. They began to consume Reiner as a ’laughingstock’, and this game gradually morphed into a monstrous entity known as ‘Drachengame’ (Dragon Game), which was organized and malicious.

Chapter 2: A Nightmare Becomes Reality, Swatting

‘Drachengame’ went beyond mere hateful comments. The haters formed a community, analyzing every video and statement of Reiner to find and share mockery. They created memes imitating his speech and dug into his private life. But the real nightmare began when digital harassment broke down the doors of reality.

The haters escalated their antics from ordering dozens of pizzas to his home to executing ‘swatting’, falsely reporting to send police SWAT teams to his house. Just one false call claiming, “There is a hostage situation at the Dragon’s Fortress.” This led to armed police repeatedly storming his home. Reiner found himself kneeling in front of guns without understanding why, leaving him with deep trauma. It was a horrific example showing that the ‘keyboard’ of the digital world could become the ’trigger’ in the real world.

These real-world attacks peaked under the name ‘Schanzfest’ (Fortress Festival). Hundreds, even thousands, of people flocked to his home, chanting mocking slogans, throwing stones, and causing chaos throughout the night. The once-peaceful rural village transformed into a scene of chaos with police responding daily.

Reiner fought back alone. He resorted to violence against the haters to defend himself, which led to further legal troubles. The fight that began online spiraled into courtroom battles and physical confrontations, growing uncontrollably.

Chapter 3: Whose Responsibility is the Weight?

Amid this long struggle, people began to ask, “Whose responsibility is this tragedy?”

  • The Logic of the Haters: They claimed it was just a ‘game’ and argued that Reiner’s extreme reactions escalated the situation. They justified their sadistic actions behind excuses like, “If he had ignored it,” or, “If he hadn’t provoked us.” Some even claimed that since Reiner was making money from the controversy, he was a ‘participant’ in the game.
  • Reiner’s Position: He viewed himself as a ‘victim’ of a decade-long group bullying. Even if his reactions were sometimes foolish and violent, they were desperate struggles of an isolated individual against a massive wave of hatred.
  • The Suffering Neighbors: The biggest victims of this blame game were the villagers. They had to endure the crowds and noise every weekend, along with the sound of police sirens. Some residents even organized vigilante groups to guard the village entrance. In their eyes, Reiner was the cause of the disaster, and the haters were the invaders who took away their peace. They were angry with both sides.

Thus, the arrows of responsibility were tangled in complexity. The provocative victim, the enjoying perpetrator, and the suffering third party. The ‘Drachenlord’ phenomenon succinctly illustrated the tragedy of modern society where the boundaries between perpetrator and victim have collapsed.

Chapter 4: The Fallen Fortress, The Questions Left Behind

The end of a decade-long struggle was miserable. Exhausted from ongoing lawsuits, fines, and relentless attacks from haters, Reiner ultimately lost everything. His only refuge and shield against the world, the ‘Dragon’s Fortress’, was demolished, leaving him wandering aimlessly.

The court even ordered him to cease his social media activities, but the internet was his only means of livelihood and connection to the world. He could not stop, and ‘Drachengame’ did not stop either. The ‘Lord of Dragons’ disappeared, but ‘Drachengame’ remained as a phenomenon, posing bitter questions to us.

Epilogue: Time to Look in the Mirror

The story of Reiner Winkler does not end as merely a personal tragedy. It has brought to the surface urgent issues that our society must contemplate. What must we do to prevent such tragedies?

  1. Responsibility of Platforms: Major platforms like YouTube cannot escape criticism for allowing hate content and cyberbullying. While hiding behind the shield of freedom of expression to generate profits, they failed to prevent the destruction of an individual’s life. Stronger and more proactive regulations and interventions are needed.
  2. Supplementing Laws and Systems: Punishing ‘digital lynching’, where an anonymous multitude attacks one individual, is very difficult under current laws. Clear regulations against new crimes like swatting and an international cooperation system to address cross-border cybercrime are urgently needed.
  3. Self-Cleansing Efforts from All of Us: The most important aspect is our own role. We must recognize whether we are consuming the pain of others in the name of ‘fun’, and that a stone thrown carelessly in anonymity can be a fatal wound for someone. Remembering that there is a ‘person’ with feelings behind the screen is the first step toward societal self-cleansing efforts.

The fall of ‘Drachenlord’ may reflect the image of our society in the mirror. If we do not confront this mirror directly and reflect on the monsters within us, the second and third tragedies may repeat themselves at any time.
