What is Your Story?

We are all like a book with our own stories. Filled with joy and sorrow, success and failure, passion and contemplation. Yet many people quietly close that book and walk the path set by the world.

Here is the story of an ordinary office worker. He felt his existence as ‘me’ becoming increasingly faint in the repetitive daily routine. “What am I good at?” “How will people remember me?” In endless contemplation, he made a decision: to create a one-of-a-kind brand called ‘me’ in the world.

This is not just the story of a special person. It could be your story. Shall we dust off the book of ‘me’ and embark on a journey to make it the most interesting story in the world?

Treasure Hunt for ‘Me’: Starting with Theme Identification

Noh Hee-young, who has successfully built numerous brands, emphasizes ’theme identification’ as the starting point of branding and the core of differentiation strategy. Knowing yourself properly is the starting point of everything. Personal branding begins not with flashy packaging, but with a cold and deep introspection of ‘me’.

Three Questions to Find ‘Your True Self’

Sit in a quiet place and honestly ask yourself questions. As Noh Hee-young says, it is essential to spend time intensely contemplating “what is true to me.”

  • What am I passionate about? (Passion & Interests)
    • What do you lose track of time doing?
    • Is there a field you explore on your own without anyone prompting you?
    • Your passion will be the most powerful engine driving your brand.
  • What are my strengths? (Strengths & Talents)
    • Recall experiences where people around you said, “You are really good at this.”
    • In what tasks did you achieve results relatively easily and quickly?
    • Your strengths will be a solid pillar that instills trust in others. Even your complexes can become powerful weapons. Noh Hee-young states that the insights gained from overcoming her own complexes shaped who she is today.
  • What kind of world do I dream of? (Values & Vision)
    • What problems do you want to solve? What positive impact do you want to have on people?
    • What does the world you dream of look like?
    • Your values will serve as an unwavering compass that guides your brand’s direction, or ‘brand philosophy’. It is about setting promises with yourself, just like the promises made with consumers that you will uphold.

Unfolding Your Unique Story to the World

Once you have identified your theme, it’s time to share your story with others. This is the process of creating your unique narrative.

Summarize Your Story in One Sentence

How do you want to be remembered by others? Try to summarize the answer to this question in one sentence. This will become your ‘brand message’.

Examples:

  • “I am a content creator who simplifies complex knowledge into easily understandable stories.”
  • “I am a life coach who helps people find special happiness in ordinary daily life.”

This one sentence will be the center of all your future communications with the world. You must convey a consistent message in blog posts, social media introductions, lectures, and even conversations with others.

The Stage is Already Set: Content Creation

The best way to share your story with the world is through ‘content’. Choose the medium in which you can express yourself best: writing, photography, video, podcasting, etc.

  • Blog/Brunch: Great for sharing in-depth thoughts and expertise. Gradually build up your experiences and know-how.
  • Instagram: Visual appeal is crucial. Show your emotions and lifestyle while engaging closely with people.
  • YouTube: You can create a deeper connection through vivid experiences and your voice.
  • LinkedIn: The best choice if you want to expand your networking around your expertise and career.

The key is consistency. You don’t need to be perfect from the start. As you continuously share your genuine experiences and thoughts, you will gradually attract fans who listen to your story.

Nurturing ‘Me’ as a Living Brand

Noh Hee-young states, “A brand is a living entity that grows, gets hurt, and can die.” It means that branding is not a one-time effort; it requires constant care and growth, just like raising a child. ‘Brand nurturing’ requires strategy.

Connecting with the World, Growing Together

Personal branding is never done alone. It is a process of connecting with others, positively influencing each other, and growing together.

  • Community Activities in Areas of Interest: Share your knowledge and experiences in online cafes, Facebook groups, etc., and communicate with people.
  • Attend Seminars and Conferences: Meet experts in your field and others who share your dreams to exchange inspiration.
  • Reach Out First: Approach those you can help first. Genuine relationships will strengthen your brand.

The Courage to Increase Your Value

One of the realistic goals of personal branding is to be properly recognized for ‘my value’. Noh Hee-young points out the cultural discomfort in discussing self-promotion and money due to Confucian values, asserting, “To raise your value, you must know how to sell yourself.” Silence only leads to loss. When presented with new opportunities, confidently place your value on the negotiation table without hesitation.

Now, It’s Your Turn

Let’s return to the initial question: What kind of story do you have?

Personal branding is a journey to rediscover ‘your true self’ in an era where ‘me’ has been lost. It is an exciting adventure of discovering your value, sharing it with the world, and creating new opportunities.

Do not be afraid. Within you lies a powerful story that can move the hearts of people around the world. As Noh Hee-young advises, “Constantly research, find your competitiveness, and communicate” is the essence of personal branding. I sincerely wish for your wonderful brand to shine in the world.
