1. We Believed We Would All Be Connected

First, let’s recall when we first encountered social media. Didn’t it seem like a wonderful world was opening up? We could greet friends from the other side of the globe every morning and chat all night with people who shared our hobbies. We firmly believed that social media would break down all the walls in the world and connect us more closely and warmly. We were filled with an exhilarating anticipation that every day would feel like a joyful party.

2. But the World We Faced

However, at some point, this party began to creak. The shock referred to as ‘Reality Shock’ starts right here. It’s the story of a cold reality that is completely different from what we expected. Let’s eavesdrop on a few neighbors’ stories.

The Evening of Ordinary Office Worker J

After work, J, exhausted, collapses onto the sofa. Habitually, she opens Instagram. Her timeline is filled with a dazzling world. A colleague is enjoying a glass of wine against a beautiful night view during a business trip abroad, and a college friend is indulging in ‘hotel vacations’ every weekend. Even a junior who just joined the company is bragging about a luxury bag as her ‘purchase of the day.’

As J scrolls down, she feels a chill in a corner of her heart. ‘Everyone is living so wonderfully; what am I doing?’ Her meager dinner of instant noodles makes her feel insignificant. What started as a way to share happiness has left J with nothing but ’endless comparisons and feelings of deprivation.’

M’s Confusion Over His Son’s Health

M is currently very worried about his son’s health issues. The hospital advised him to follow the doctor’s prescription, but out of concern, he searched YouTube. He came across a video titled ‘Miraculous Treatments Unknown to Doctors.’ Once he started watching, the algorithm relentlessly recommended similar videos.

Before long, M became obsessed with the thought, ‘Are these videos real, and are doctors hiding something?’ Unverified information and sensational claims plunged him deeper into distrust and confusion. What was once a space to gain useful information has now become a ‘hotbed of fake news and conspiracy theories,’ clouding M’s rational judgment.

S’s Tears as a Small Workshop Owner

S found great joy in showcasing her handmade crafts online. She felt small happiness communicating with people who appreciated her work. However, one day, malicious comments began appearing for no apparent reason.

“You’re selling this? No conscience at all.” “Just looking at your face, you seem like a scammer.”

The daggers from people she didn’t know pierced S’s heart. The space once filled with passion and pride quickly became stained with fear and hurt. The ‘cowardly violence hidden behind anonymity’ was shaking the dream S had painstakingly nurtured.

3. The True Meaning of the ‘Shock’ We Face

The stories of J, M, and S vividly illustrate the essence of the ‘Reality Shock’ caused by social media. This shock goes beyond mere disappointment of ’not meeting expectations’; it shakes the very way we perceive the world, revealing a more fundamental issue.

First, the shock of cognitive dissonance from ’edited reality.’ We know in our heads that the images on social media are staged. However, as in J’s case, our emotions constantly compare the most brilliant moments of others with our most ordinary moments, causing us pain. As the boundary between real life and well-crafted fake reality collapses, we suffer from a powerful cognitive dissonance that makes our lives feel abnormal or failed. This is the first shock we experience.

Second, the shock of the thought prison created by ‘algorithms.’ We accessed social media to see a broader world, but, as in M’s case, technology instead traps us in a narrow ‘filter bubble.’ Algorithms that show only the information we want to see rob us of the opportunity to meet and discuss with people who hold different views. While the world seems to have expanded, our thoughts become increasingly extreme and isolated; this is the second shock.

Finally, the shock of violence wielded by ‘anonymity.’ The democratic ideal of giving everyone a voice manifests in a reality where anyone can easily throw stones at others, as seen in S’s tears. The ‘me’ online, separated from the ‘me’ in reality, speaks harshly without accountability, ignoring how deeply it wounds others. The fact that a space created for connection can become such a cruel weapon is perhaps the coldest and most realistic third shock.

Ultimately, ‘Reality Shock’ is a process of realizing how naive our expectations reflected in the mirror of social media were, and how much we overlooked the dual nature of humanity and technology hidden behind them. However, facing this shock can lead not to despair but to a new beginning. We now have the obligation to critically view and use this powerful tool rather than accepting it blindly. It is time to seek answers to what true connection is and how healthy communication is possible.
