Apple, the Trap of Contaminated Screens

Hello! Today, I want to share a story about the massive storm shaking the feet of the world’s most brilliant company, Apple. On the surface, everything seems calm, but beneath lies a drama where the future is uncertain. This is the war surrounding ‘contaminated screens.’

1. A Well-Written Script: Samsung’s Two Calculated Attacks

Every story has a beginning, and this massive storm started with two stones thrown by a seasoned strategist named Samsung Display (SDC). Many people felt reassured after seeing only the first stone, but the real storm came with the second stone.

First Act: The Illusion of “It Will Be Okay”

The story began in December 2022 when Samsung filed a ‘patent infringement’ lawsuit against component wholesalers using BOE panels. Like the first act of a play, the market took this lawsuit lightly. Then, in March 2025, the court ruled that BOE did infringe on patents but did not need to be immediately expelled from the U.S. BOE shouted, “We won!” and everyone, including Apple, breathed a sigh of relief. They thought the worst was over, and only financial issues remained. However, this was merely the prologue to a grand drama prepared by the giant Samsung.

Second Act: The Hidden Decisive Blow

While everyone was complacent, Samsung quietly drew its second sword in October 2023. This time, it targeted the ’trade secrets’ rather than the ‘patents.’ The claim was, “BOE did not just copy a few technologies. They grew by stealing our company’s blood and sweat, that is, our workforce and core secrets!” This assertion was backed by concrete evidence that BOE had poached Samsung’s former researchers and pressured partners to steal confidential information.

Then, in July 2025, an unexpected ruling emerged. The U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) issued a 14 years and 8 months ban on BOE’s imports to the U.S., effectively a death sentence. This sent a strong message that technology theft could never succeed by unfairly shortening the technology development period. BOE’s earlier shout of “perfect victory” turned into a trailer for the most horrific defeat.

2. A Broken Lever: What BOE Meant to Apple

You might think, “Isn’t Apple okay even if one supplier disappears?” But BOE was not just a simple parts supplier to Apple. It was the most important ‘weapon’ that protected Apple’s massive profits.

The Technology that Dominates Prices: ‘Leverage’

Apple has always been a master of the ’leverage strategy,’ competing multiple suppliers to drive down component prices. In the OLED market, two South Korean companies, Samsung and LG Display, held a tight grip on the market. To break this structure, Apple nurtured BOE in China for years. Supported by the Chinese government, BOE could offer much lower prices, and Apple used BOE’s price tag as a weapon to pressure Samsung and LG to lower their supply prices.

BOE was Apple’s ‘price leverage’ that maximized profitability. However, now that leverage has shattered into pieces with a single ruling from the ITC.

3. A Dilemma: The Three Storms Facing Apple

Apple officially announced, “This ruling does not affect our products,” but this is akin to shouting, “My feet are not wet!” in front of a massive wave. Three enormous storms threaten Apple beneath the surface.

  1. The Storm of Law ⛈️: Now Samsung can use the ITC ruling to directly sue Apple. The logic is, “You knew the parts were made with technology stolen by BOE, yet you bought them and made huge profits, so you are also an accomplice!” The damages from this lawsuit could reach tens of trillions of won.
  2. The Storm of Reputation 🌪️: Apple, which has championed ‘innovation’ and ’ethics,’ could see its brand image plummet simply by being embroiled in a lawsuit as a ‘beneficiary of stolen technology.’ This is also a self-contradiction that directly violates the ‘Supplier Code of Conduct’ Apple created.
  3. The Storm of Geopolitics 🌊: This ruling is not just a corporate battle. It is a direct clash between the U.S. resolve to firmly address technology theft and China’s ambition for technological ascendance. Apple now finds itself trapped in a dilemma, forced to answer the question, “Which side will you stand on?” between the U.S. and China.

4. The Price of Dilemma: The Hidden Truth Behind iPhone 17

Amid all these crises, the recently announced price of the iPhone 17 surprisingly did not rise significantly. Everyone expected a sharp increase in prices due to soaring component costs, but Apple effectively played the card of ‘price freeze.’ This moment best illustrates Apple’s dilemma.

Apple could have raised prices to maintain its legendary profitability, but it feared that consumers would turn away due to the increased prices. Ultimately, Apple chose a ‘desperate measure’ to absorb the enormous additional costs instead of passing them on to consumers. Behind the ‘fair price tag’ of the iPhone 17 lies Apple’s internal struggles as profits are being cut.

5. Forced Retreat and New Paths

Ultimately, this situation signifies Apple’s failure of the supply chain strategy built over the past decade and a ‘forced retreat.’ The era of chasing efficiency and cost reduction is over; a new era has opened where stability and management of geopolitical risks must be prioritized.

Investors and all of us must now look at Apple from a different perspective.

  • Immediate Separation: How quickly Apple can completely remove BOE’s parts from the Western market will be the first test of its crisis management capabilities.
  • Declining Profitability: The extent to which ‘gross profit margin’ drops in Apple’s quarterly earnings reports will be the most important indicator of the depth of the wounds inflicted by this situation.
  • New Alternatives: In the long term, Apple will accelerate the development of next-generation displays like ‘microLED’ to avoid being swayed by external suppliers.

The ‘contaminated screens’ incident has left a painful lesson for Apple. Even the most successful companies can fall into a massive crisis due to a single component or a wrong choice. Now, we all must watch how Apple will rise from this forced retreat to create a stronger and wiser future, as an exciting story begins.
